Answer any TWO Questions in Section A and ALL Questions from Section B.

SECTION A: (30 MARKS)

1.Discuss the biosynthesis of Murein and mode of inhibition by the ß -lactam antibiotics.(15 marks)

2.Define the term "virulence" and with regard to the genus "streptococcus" Explain the basis for virulence,giving specific examples and details involved at each stage.(15 marks)

3.(a) Describe the fermentive production of ethanol in yeast and bacteria species.

(b) Highlight the biotechnological use of fermentation in yeast.(15 marks)

4.Describe the biochemical basis of excessive diarrhea observed in Vibrio cholera colonization in Man.(6 marks)

5.Explain how retroviruses differ from other viruses.(3 marks)

6(a) What distinguishing characteristics separate the archaebacteria from Eubacteria?

(b) Explain how Archaebacteria have modified Entner-Doudoroff glycolytic pathway to meet their cellular requirements.(11 marks)

7.Superficial mycoses are cosmetic infections that are easily diagnosed and treated. Justify this statement.(4 marks)

8.Illustrate structurally how penicillin can be chemically modified to produce potent antimicrobials.(8 marks)

9.A patient was admitted at New Nyanza Provincial General Hospital complaining of abnominal pain,fever,vomiting and diarrhea.The physician suspected him to be suffering from mixed infections caused by S.typhi,G.Lamblia,E.histolytica and Staphylococcus aureus;

(a) Design selective media which could be used to carry out confirmatory diagnostic tests for each of the above organisms,

(b) Suggest a combined therapy to combat the disease.

(c) List other causes of diarrhea.(8 marks)
