1. a) Briefly discuss the nature of mathematics as:

b) i) Discuss the goals of education as clarified by scopes (1973)

ii) Identify and explain clearly 3 main components of an ideally well stated
mathematics instructional objectives. (3mks)
c) The secondary school mathematics curriculum in Kenya has undergone three
main phases of development since 1960. Identify and briefly explain each of the
phases. (6mks)
d) With the help of a conceptual network show how mathematics relates to the real
world. Briefly explain your model. (6mks)
e) i) Differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to learn
mathematics citing examples in each case. (2mks)
ii) How can motivation to learn be fostered in mathematics classrooms.

2. a) Using examples discuss four (4) different ways in which the teaching and learning
of mathematics contribute significantly towards individual development and
hence the development of whole society. (4mks)
b) i) Identify and explain four (4) factors that need to be considered when
designing a qualitative mathematics schemes of work. (4mks)
ii) Discuss three (3) limitations of K.C.S.E mathematics syllabus when used
by teachers in planning for mathematics lessons. (6mks)
c) i) Explain four (4) purposes of undertaking instructional evaluation in
mathematics lessons. (4mks)
ii) What is a table of test item specification? (2mks)
iii) Discuss any four advantages of preparing a table of test item specifications
in relation to construction of a mathematics examination/test

3. a) Teaching/Learning aids are essential in a mathematics lesson. Discuss
i) With the help of relevant examples cite two (2) uses of teaching/learning
aids in a mathematics lesson. (4mks)
ii) Two (2) factors that influence the selection of any teaching/learning aids
before use in a mathematics lesson. (4mks)
b) Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), mathematics examination
result often portray girls as being poor performers compared to boys.
i) State and explain three (3) causes of such disadvantages to the girls in the
teaching and learning of mathematics. (6mks)
ii) What strategies would you adopt as a teacher of mathematics to minimize
such disadvantages and improve the levels of performance amongst girls
in mathematics. (6mks)

4. a) What is mathematics? (2mks)
i) Why do we teach/learn problem solving in mathematics lessons?
(4mks)
b) Discuss the three levels of mathematics thinking and relate it to bloom’s
educational objectives. (6mks)
c) Select a topic of your choice from KCSE mathematics syllabus, derive two
suitable objectives for which guided discovery would be most appropriate.
