PART ONE

Question One (30 marks)

a. Describe the format of an internet message as described by RFC 822 (message format
standard) (4 marks)

b. Describe the four main ways that the MIME definition extends the internet message
format defined in RFC 822. (6 marks)

c. Name one subtype for each of the following MIME media types
i. Text
ii. Image
iii. Audio
iv. Video (2 marks)

d. What MIME media type supports
i. The inclusion of digital signatures in a message (1 mark)
ii. A word processing message body (1 mark)

e. What is an open relay? Give the main disadvantage of an open relay. (2 marks)

f. Some SMTP relays on the internet limit the size of the messages that they can relay.
Describe how this can be overcome so that a message exceeding the message limit can
be relayed, and which MIME media type is used to support this. (3 marks)

g. What SMTP command would SMTP server, mail.nexus.com, use to check whether the
e mail address neil@papau.com is valid from SMTP server, mail.papau.com? Write
down the correct syntax of how the command is used. (2 marks)

h. What is the SMTP command EXPN used for? (1 mark)

i. Job whose e mail address is job@test.com successfully sends an e mail message to Jane
whose e mail address is jane@example.com. The content of the message is “How are
you today?” Write down the SMTP transaction used between Job’s mail server,
mail.test.com and Jane’s mail server, mail.example.com in the sending of this message.

j. Explain why an SMTP server configured to send e mail through a relay uses less
computing resources than one configured to use DNS lookup. (2 marks)

a. Describe the three different models that can be used for client-server e mail in relation
to IMAP servers and IMAP clients. (6 marks)

c. Describe giving examples the two main categories of message attributes used by
IMAP. (3 marks)

d. Describe what the Network News Transfer Protocol is used for. (2 marks)

e. What is a directory service? (1 mark)

f. With regard to directory servers explain what is meant by reference and chaining.
(2 marks)

a. Groupware technologies typically fall within two broad primary categories. Name
and describe these categories and give two examples of groupware in each category.

c. Describe three advantages of the front-end back-end mail system architecture.

d. Describe five message system features that you would consider when selecting
a messaging system. (5 marks)

e. Name and describe four steps involved in planning and designing a messaging system.

Question Four (20 marks)

a. Your company has just finished setting up a messaging system for organization XYZ.
The organization has branches in all major towns in Kenya. The headquarters is in
Nairobi where most but not all the administrative tasks will be carried out. The
management is very resistant to you carrying out training sessions because they fear
that it might be too costly.

i. What two advantages would you give them for client training? (2 marks)
ii. What cost effective methods would you suggest to them to use to train all the
users at the different branches? (4 marks)
iii. What administrative model would you set up for them and why? (2 marks)
