• Answer FOUR Questions
• (Credit will be awarded to clear original thought and adequate reference to texts in answering questions. Do not duplicate material in answer to more than one question)
1. Making reference to various debates, discuss and critically evaluate the generic concept of ‘African Literature’. [15 Marks]
2. Referring closely to literary texts analyse and critically evaluate the interface of the oral and written literatures in Africa. [15 Marks]
3. Basing your discussions on the postcolonial theory critically discuss the main trends in African Literature in the Twentieth Century. Make adequate reference to literary texts.
[15 Marks]
4. Critically evaluate the place of Marxist literary criticism of African Literature. Refer to either the works of Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Alex La Guma or Sebere Ousmane.
[15 Marks]
5. Attempt a feminist criticism of at least two works by either Mariama Ba or Margaret
Ogella. [15 Marks]
6. Critically discuss and evaluate in detail the various literary innovations in either
Ngugi wa Thiongo’s The Wizard of the Crow or Ben Okri’s The Farmished Road.
