BIOC 307: ANTIBIOTICS

INSTRUCTIONS:

Attempt All questions from Section A and B.

SECTION A

1.Determine whether the following statements are true or false;

(i) Drugs that prevent the formation of the bacterial cell wall are more effective on spores.

(ii) Microbial resistance to drugs is acquired through conjugation,transformation and transduction of the R factors.

(iii) An antibiotic use disrupts the normal flora in a host and causes super-infection.

(iv) The minimum inhibitory concentration of an antibiotic is the highest concentration of the drug that is required to inhibit growth of a microbe.

(v) Bacteriostatic antibiotics are recommended for use in cases of severe secondary bacterial infections in HIV patients.

(vi) Polymixin is an antibiotic that is highly toxic to humans when administered intravenously.

(vii) The indiscriminate use of antibiotics can result in an ecological disaster.

3.What do you understand by the term "antibiotic sensitivity testing".Describe the methods used in antibiotic sensitivity testing.For each test give advantages and disadvantages.(10 marks)

4.Discuss in detail,the mechanism of action of the following antibiotics;

(a) Penicillin G.

(b) Potentiated sulphonamides.(15 marks)

5.Using specific examples,describe in detail the various mechanism that microbes use to evade the effects of antibiotics.(15 marks)

6.Discuss the characteristics and importance in chemotherapy of an ideal antibiotic.(10 marks)
