SECTION A: (30 MARKS)
1. Explain the essence of the following practices in the specified cut flowers:
(a) Bending in roses [3 Marks]
(b) Thinning in Alstroemeria [2 Marks]
2. State two symptoms of damage and two control measures of the following pest and
disease of economic importance in flower production.
(a) Red spider mites. [4 Marks]
(b) Powder Mildew under greenhouse production [4 Marks]
3. Discus any six factors that affect post harvest life of cut flowers. [12 Marks]
4. Outline steps followed in cormel treatment for Gladiolus propagation. [5 Marks]
SECTION B: (40 MARKS)
5. Discuss factors that have contributed to the success of the floriculture industry in Kenya. [20 Marks]
6. Give a detailed outline of the main cultural practices carried out in Carnation production. [20 Marks]
7. The European Union market is concerned over indiscriminate use of Agrochemicals in all export produce. Most cut flower growers have to conform to practices towards achieving maximum residue levels (MRLs). If you were a manager in one of the export farms in Kenya what practices would you adopt to achieve this? [20 Marks]
