FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN
ECONOMICS & MATHEMATICS
COURSE CODE: BMGT 320/ECON 321

INSTRUCTIONS:
- Answer Question ONE, TWO and either THREE or FOUR.

QUESTION ONE
a) “Research is all about creation, extension and storage of knowledge”. With
regard to this statement, give the general classification of the uses of research.
(5mks)
b) “Empirical research in developing countries and Kenya in particular creates so
many problems for the researchers” State the problems that are usually faced by
such researchers. (5mks)
c) What is meant by a “research problem”? (5mks)
d) Explain the components of a research problem. (5mks)
e) Describe the techniques used to define a research problem (5mks)

QUESTION TWO
A population is divided into three strata so that N1 = 5000, N2 = 2000 and N3 = 3000.
Respective standard deviations are:
i1 = 15, i2 = 18, i3 = 5.
If the researcher wants to draw a sample of 84 from the whole population, how many
elements will be selected from each stratum using
a) Proportionate sampling method (6mks)
b) Disproportionate sampling method (9mks)
c) If the respective cost of sampling in the stratum is given as
C1 = 30,000
C2 = 20,000
C3 = 45,000
How should a sample of 90 be allocated to the three strata, if we want optimum allocation
using disproportionate sampling design and considering the cost of sampling?
(15mks)

QUESTION THREE
a) Explain the important features of a research design (5mks)
b) State the common sources of error in field work and explain how they can be
minimized. (5mks)
c) Describe the various measures of relationships often used in the context of
