Define the following

iii) Outline at least any FOUR objectives of research (2mks)
2. i) Define Hypothesis (1mk)
ii) Identify TWO types of Hypothesis (2mks)
iii) Describe THREE purposes of hypothesis (3mks)
3. Statistical inferences about a population are made valid if the sample is selected in
such a way that they are representative of the population. Random sampling is
one of way of ensuring that selection of participants is objectively done. Define
and briefly explain the following
a) Statistics (1mk)
b) Population (1mk)
c) A sample (1mk)
d) Random sampling (1mk)
4. i) Describe TWO ways of carrying out random sampling (2mks)
ii) Why would a researcher consider sampling participants to gather data
from a population? (3mks)
5. i) Define literature review (1mk)
ii) Identify FIVE purposes of literature review (5mks)
SECTION B: ESSAY – Answer ALL questions (45 Marks)
6. Research instruments are the means by which primary data are collected in social
sciences. Questionnaire is an example of such instruments.
i) Distinguish between open and closed questions
ii) Under each of the above (6i) give TWO examples (15mks)
7. In a class of 100 pupils the mean of a test is 15 and standard deviation is 2.5
Assuming these 100 scores have a normal distribution
i) How many pupils’ scores lie between 12.5 and 17.5?
ii) How many scored less than 20?
iii) How many scored between 16 and 18?
NB: Marks are awarded based on calculations! (15mks)
8. Assuming you have conducted a research project
i) State at least FIVE sections to be considered in a research process.
ii) Under each of the sections in 7 (i) write a short paragraph explaining what
each of them is all about. (15mks)
