1. Giving relevant examples where applicable, differentiate between the following concepts
as they are used in Educational Psychology:
i) Primary and secondary motives
ii) Positive and negative reinforcement
iii) Experimental and non experimental methods of study
iv) Fixed interval and fixed ratio schedules of reinforcement
v) Independent and dependent variables
iv) Extraneous and moderator variables. (20 Marks)
2. a) Explain the basic assumptions of Maslow’s hierarchy of motives
b) How does Maslow’s hierarchy of needs apply to the teaching-learning process?
c) Critically evaluate Maslow’s theory. (20 Marks)
3. A student has been involved in drug abuse:
a) Explain how the following theories of learning can account for how the student could
have come to be hooked to the behaviour:
i) Operant
ii) Social learning
iii) Cognitive
b) From a counseling point of view based on the above theories, suggest a remedy
to the drug abuse behaviour. (20 Marks)
4. a) Differentiate between the three levels of memory
b) Discuss and critique the following theories that may account for forgetting of
learnt information during an examination:
i) Decay
ii) Consolidation
iii) Retrieval failure
5. a) Give the basic assumptions and a critique of each of the following psychological
theories.
i) Latent learning theory
ii) Social learning theory
iii) Operant learning theory
b) Explain two (2) major contributions of each of these theories in the teaching-learning
process.
6. a) Define the word intelligence
b) Elaborate on the abilities that constitute intelligence
c) Why are some of the traditional intelligence tests developed in Western Countries
not suitable to our local environment?
