1. Discuss the importance of knowledge in biology to an individual. (10mks)

2. Three of the objectives of teaching biology to secondary school students are to
enable the learner:
a) Develop an understanding of the interrelationships between plants and
animals and between humans and their environment.
b) Relate and apply relevant biological knowledge and understanding to
social economic situations in rural and urban settings.
c) Create awareness of the value of cooperation in solving problems.
How would you, as a biology teacher, ensure that each of the indicated objectives is
achieved during the instruction? (20mks)

3. Since 1960, a number of innovations have been attempted for the improvement of
the traditional biology curriculum and instruction.
a) State any three of the innovations. (3mks)
b) Discuss the objectives and the effectiveness of each of the innovations in
achieving the intended objectives. (12mks)

4. a) What is scientific method? (5mks)
b) Identify any five (5) scientific skills that should be developed during biology
instruction and explain how you as a biology teacher can ensure that the skills are
developed in your learners. (10mks)

5. a) What are the advantages of a scheme of work and a lesson plan in the process of
biology instruction? (8mks)
b) Outline and discuss the factors that a biology teacher needs to take into account
while preparing each of the plans indicated in 5 (a). (17mks)

6. List and discuss the main characteristics of a well managed biology practical
class? (10mks)

7. Assume that you are a quality Assurance Officer in your District and one of your
tasks is to assess the effectiveness of teaching biology in the District.
Develop a criteria that would guide you in the assessment of the biology lessons.
