(a) Explain any two definitions of the term “word” and state their shortcomings. (8 marks)
(b) Using appropriate examples, discuss the meaning of the following terms. (6 marks)

(iii) Lexeme
(c) Differentiate with suitable illustrations the concepts of inflection and derivation and
their realization in English. (12 marks)
(d) Discuss how lexical verbs differ from auxiliaries. (8 marks)
