a) By making use of diagrams briefly describe and compare Time Division Multiplexing,
Frequency Division Multiplexing and Statistical Multiplexing. (9 marks)

b) Differentiate between between serial and parallel transmission. (2 marks)
c) What are the functions of the following internetworking devices?
i) Bridge

d) What is VOIP? Give TWO advantages. (2 marks)
e) Name and explain briefly three wireless transmission modes of communication, giving
examples where each of the modes are used. (6 marks)
f) Is voice transmission best suited to connection oriented or connectionless service? Explain
your answer. (1 mark)

a) Using simple diagrams sketch and name FOUR different logical topologies
that are used in LANs. (4 marks)
b) Using a diagram, explain how a pair of modems can allow communication
between two geographically separated computers. (6 marks)
c) Data may be carried across a network using a variety of channels. What is a transmission
media? (1 mark)
d) Describe the properties of the following transmission media, giving ONE advantage and
ONE disadvantage of each medium:
i) Coaxial cable (3 marks)
ii) Twisted Pair cable (3 marks)
iii) Fiber optic cable. (3 marks)

a) Data may be carried across transmission channels using the different techniques of
synchronous and asynchronous signalling. Clearly describe and explain the difference
between synchronous communication and asynchronous communication.

b) Describe the basic operation of a packet switching network. (4 marks)
c) Name the THREE major sections of a packet in a packet switched system.
(3 marks)
d) With the aid of diagrams briefly describe the following direction flows:
i) Simplex
ii) Half Duplex
iii) Full Duplex (6 marks)
e) Name the global addressing scheme that is used across the Internet and state
the number of bits used for this addressing scheme. (1 marks)

a) Give FOUR differences between LAN and WAN. (4 marks)
b) What is OSI reference model? (2 marks)
c) Give THREE reasons why a layered communications model is desirable in
networked communications. (6 marks)
d) Describe TWO functions of the each of the following layers of the OSI model.

iii) Network
iv) Transport (8 marks)

You work for a company that designs and installs local area networks for businesses.
A company has contacted you and asked you to provide brief descriptions of the
following:

a) Ergonomics (3 marks)
b) Client/ server computing (3 marks)
c) Print server (3 marks)
d) Logical Star network topology (3 marks)
e) Firewall (3 marks)
f) When data is transmitted, errors can occur. Explain how the error checking
method of cyclic redundancy checking (CRC) operates when a message is
sent between two computers using this method. (5 marks)
