Question One (Compulsory)
On 4th August 2000, 126 employees of commonbond Limited, went on strike over a dispute regarding the retrenchment package to which they were to be entitled. This was after common bond had issued a memo asking employees interested in voluntary early retirement to submit their names.
The management of commonbond and employee’s union – the Railway workers union later issued a joint circular asking employees to return to their places of work. The employees failed to comply and the management issued them with letters of summary dismissal for gross misconduct.
The reasons cited in their letters of dismissal were:
Participating in an unlawful strike
Absenteeism from their places of work
Refusal to obey lawful orders.
