a) Define the term ‘oral literature’ and show why there have been controversies
surrounding it. (24 marks)
OR b) Comment on the following statement by Ngugi wa Thiong’o touching on
the relevance of oral literature: ‘The oral tradition is rich and many sided … the
art did not end yesterday; it is a living tradition.’ (24 marks)

2. Compare and contrast either any two trickster tales or songs from different
communities. (23marks)

3. With references to any oral text you have read, determine what may have been missed
by ignoring its performance. (23marks)

4. With ample illustrations, show ways in which the short forms such as riddles,
proverbs and mchongoano are related to one another. (23marks)
