page: Why hyenas limp)
Why hyenas limp
The hyena and the Vulture were once great friends. One day, after a hunting trip, the
vulture invited the hyena for a good meal of meat. When the hyena, in turn invited the vulture
for meat, he offered his guests insides of a green calabash which, being whitish, looked like very
fat flesh from a distance. In his greed, he refused to part with his good meat. So the vulture
went home hungry, but planning revenge.
Before long, the vulture asked the hyena to collect all the others of his clan to accompany
the vulture to the skies on a hunting trip. This the hyena did eagerly, for he had greatly liked the
meat given to him by the vulture. They were going to get a lot more of the same kind. Early the
following day, all the hyenas of the world collected outside the vulture’s house, every one of
them carrying wooden barrels, hives, large and small baskets, pots of all descriptions and even
granaries. Led by the vulture’s friend, they all clung onto the vulture’s tail-feather to be flown to
the skies – all except one old limping hyena who was considered too weak to journey to the
skies.
Up and up they went. From time to time, the vulture would ask them what they could see
on the earth. First the housetops, then the tops of the tallest trees and then only the peaks of the
highest mountains; up they went until they could see nothing but empty darkness. At this time,
the cunning vulture started singing, “Feather, pluck yourself and crash.”
“Hey, what are you saying friend?” asked the terrified hyenas, but he kept repeating the
same words and flying higher still.
Suddenly, the feather plucked itself off and all the hyenas came crashing to the ground;
the containers they carried pounded them to death. One and all, they died except the limping one
who had not joined the others. No wonder they all limp.
