a). i) What do you understand by the term International phonetic Alphabet.(IPA) (2marks)
ii).With specific examples, examine the circumstances that led to the development of the International
Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). (10marks)
iii). State and explain any two circumstances in which the schwa [¶] sound is used. (4marks)
b). Use an example to distinguish the following terms as used in phonetics and phonology.
i). Narrow and broad description
ii). Allophones and phonemes
iii). Vowels and consonants
iv). Articulators and speech sounds. (8marks)
c). There is a mismatch between some English words in orthography and pronunciation.
Provide two reasons for this. (2marks)
d). Identify any two differences between consonant sounds [s] and [g] as far as airstream mechanism
