1a). Speech is one of the major aspects that distinguish human beings from animals. With
an example explain how speech sounds are produced. (5 marks)

b).With just one example, define the following concepts. (4 marks)
i). Phoneme
ii) Allophone

c). Articulatory phonetics deals with the study of sound production. Identify and explain the
specific articulators involved in the production of the following sounds. (6 marks)

i). Bilabial sounds
ii). Palato-alveolar sounds.
iii). Labio-dental sounds.

d) i). Use examples, to describe how voiceless and voiced sounds are produced.
(4 marks)

ii). Voiceless sounds fall into two classes depending on the timing of the vocal cord closure.
With the aid of any example identify and explain the two classes. (5 marks)

e) How are the following articulators physiologically adapted to produce sounds?
i). Lips (2 marks)
ii).Tongue (2 marks)
iii). Teeth (2 marks)

2).i).The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) was developed in 1888 to symbolize the sounds
of all the languages. State and explain any four characteristics of the IPA.

ii).State and explain the three major parameters that are used to describe consonants.

3a). Use the cardinal vowel chart of the English Language, to describe the eight primary
cardinal vowels. (12 marks)

iv).Nasal and oral sounds

b). Suprasegmental features are over or above the segmental values of voicing or place of
articulation. Describe any two suprasegmental features evident in languages. (8 marks)
