1. Study the map provided, EAST AFRICA, 1:50,000, KENYA, Machakos sheet 162/2, series
Y731, Edition 6-5k, 1976.
(a) On the tracing paper provided, delimit the drainage basin with the base level at grid
reference 230134. (5Mrks)

(b) Calculate;-
(i) Bifurcation rations (6Mrks)
(ii) Basin area (3Mrks)
(iii) Drainage density (4Mrks)
(iv) Comment on results. (4Mrks)

(c) Using the Machakos map, explain the factors influencing distribution of human
activities. (10Mrks)

2. (a) With well illustrated diagrams, write short notes on the following;
(i) Fiducial marks (5Mrks)
(ii) Oblique Aerial photography (5Mrks)
(iii) Tilt Displacement (5Mrks)

(b) An aerial photo-mission demands pre-setting of an appropriate focal length (f) of the
camera as well as an altimeter setting (H) and terrain altitude (h) above mean sea level
(a.m.s.l). Given that f = 2500mm, H = 800 metres a.m.s.l. and h = 1800 metres a.m.s.l.,
compute the scale of the photographs. (5Mrks)

3. Using Njoro map (series Y731, scale 1:50,000) provided:
(a) Compute the area (in Hectares) bounded by the road running between grid references
275593 and 316498 and grid references 250500 and 250580. (8Mrks)

(b) Enlarge the details in Njoro town, with a radius of 2 km from the town centre to scale
1:25,000. Indicate the method used (12Mrks)

4. (a) Explain why geographers are interested in studying relief. (5Mrks)
(b) Discuss pictorial methods of studying relief. (15Mrks)

5. (a) Using Machakos map, apply the Nearest Neighbour technique to analyze the distribution
of schools in the area bounded by the grid references 060100, 060200, 200100 and
200200. (11Mrks)
(b) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Nearest Neighbour index in describing
distribution of settlements points. (9Mrks)
