1. (a) Define the term psychology (2 mks)
(b) Explain the major goals of psychology (5 Mks)
(c) Give a brief history of the development of psychology as a science of human
behaviour (5 Mks)
(d) Define the term intelligence and explain why psychologist found it difficult to define
the concept of intelligence. (5 Mks)
(e) Explain the following terms and give examples in a classroom set-up.
(i) Positive reinforcement (2 Mks)
(ii) Negative reinforcement (2 Mks)
(iii) Behaviour shaping (2 Mks)
(iv) Schedules of reinforcement (2 Mks)
(v) Learning (2 Mks)
(f) John was recently employed in one of the schools which emphasizes on IQ test. He is
working in the department of recruitment, what advice can you give him as far as IQs are
concerned in the recruiting process? (3 Mks)

2. (a) Define the terms drive and motivation. (2 Mks)
(b) Briefly explain what motivated you to enroll in this course and how it can help you to
deliver effectively as a teacher. (8 Mks)
(c) Motivation is key to good performance. Justify the assumptions. (10 Mks)

3. (a) Describe classical conditioning by giving examples on how it can enhance effective
learning in classroom set-up. (6 Mks)
(b) Discuss the developmental cognitive view of learning. (7 Mks)
(c) Using the social learning theory, explain how trainees develop negative attitude
towards instructors (7 Mks)

4. (a) Discuss the usefulness of operant conditioning to learning (5 Mks)
(b) Explain how the operant learning theory can be used to modify undesirable
behaviour among learners. (5 Mks)
(c) Recently the Kenyan government stopped caning of learners in schools. Assuming
you have been given an opportunity to advice the Minister for Education, what
recommendations can you make in relation to reinforcement and punishment.
