SECTION ONE (30 MARKS)
1. a) Trace the definitions of psychology from 16th century to the present (4 marks)
b) Mention the philosophers of ancient Greece and explain how their philosophy still
shape psychology today (4 marks)
c) Differentiate and discuss the contribution of the following theories to learning:
(i) Explain the term “classical conditioning” and use two examples to illustrate
educational implications of this theory to learning.
(ii) Explain the term “operant” use two examples to illustrate two educational
implications of this theory to learning (6 marks)
d) Explain the focus of the behaviorist’s approach to learning (2 marks)
e) Outline two aspects that make psychology a science (2 marks)
f) State and explain briefly three sources of motivation (3 marks)
g) Discuss Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and explain its relevance to education
(5 marks)
h) Explain ‘maternal motive’ and mention three stimuli that drive this behavior
(4 marks)

2. a) Illustrate, using four examples, how a teacher can reinforce learners (4 marks)
b) Explain schedules of reinforcement and discuss how you can use them effectively to
enhance teaching and learning (12 marks)
c) Using examples, differentiate between a primary and a secondary reinforcement
(4 marks)

3. a) Define motivation (2 marks)
b) With use of examples, differentiate between a drive and an incentive (4 marks)
c) Using one example from each of the three categories of biological needs of a human
being, discuss their relevance to teaching and learning (6 marks)
d) Discuss eight socio-psychological needs associated with the socio-cultural
environment of an individual. (8 marks)

4. a) Mention five areas that psychoanalysis focus on in explaining behavior (5 marks)
b) According to Freud, there are three levels of personality, each with a different 2

function. Explain these levels and their functions (6 marks)
c) Give an in-dept analysis of the id, ego and the super ego in shaping one’s personality
