SECTION ONE: (30 Marks)
1. a) Trace the definitions of psychology from 16th century to the present

b) “Plato’s and Aristole’s rationalism and empiricism still shape the practice
of teaching today”. Support this statement. (4mks)
c) Classical and operant theories when used appropriately will make teaching and
learning successful. Discuss the contribution of these theories to learning.

d) Explain the focus of the cognitive approach to learning. (2mks)
e) Define motivation (2mks)
f) State and explain briefly three sources of motivation. (3mks)
g) Discuss Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and explain its relevance to education.

h) Explain using examples two ways in which psychology has contributed to
improving our every day lives. (2mks)

b) Explain schedules of reinforcement and discuss how you can use them effectively to
enhance teaching and learning. (12mks)
c) Using examples, differentiate between positive and a negative reinforcement.

b) Discuss how arousal theory can be used to enhance learning (4mks)
c) Discuss six stages of Erickson’s psycho-social stages indicating how you will
incorporate this knowledge in your teaching. (6mks)
d) Discuss eight socio-psychological needs associated with the socio-cultural
environment of an individual. (8mks)

4. a) Identify five areas that psychoanalysis focus on in explaining behaviour.

b) According to Freud, there are three levels of personality, each with a different
function. Explain these levels and their functions. (6mks)
c) Give an in-depth analysis of the id, ego and the super ego in shaping one’s
personality. (9mks)
