END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATION FOR MASTER OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURAL & RURAL DEVELOPMENT, MAY, 2012 (DAY)
UNIT TITLE : RESEARCH DESIGN AND DATA ANALYSIS
UNIT CODE : AGRI 571
TIME: 3 HOURS
SECTION A: Answer all questions (30 marks)
Question One
What is an experimental design in statistics?
(2mks)
Show the difference between a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and a Latin square design.
(4mks)
What is a ’hypothesis’ in statistics?
(2mks)
Explain the main purpose of hypothesis testing.
(2mks)
Question Two
In data analysis, you either conduct a Z – test, t- test or F-test. Explain the factors to be considered in choosing the type of analysis to be conducted.
(6mks)
Explain the following terms as used in statistics
Error type I
Factorial experiments.
(4mks)
Complete the ANOVA table below and answer the questions that follows:
Sov df Ss Ms F Sig
Blocks 2 17.92 - - 0.365
Maize van A 3 109.75 - - 0.000
Fet. Levels (B) 3 49.64 - - 0.032
A x B - 0.24 - - 0.76
Error - - - -
Total 47 231.89 -
Were the blocks ’effective’ or ’not effective’? Explain.
Discuss the differences between the maize variety means.
Comment on the interaction effects between the maize varieties and fertilizer levels.
(10mks)
SECTION B: Answer any two questions (30mks)
Question Three
A professor of the mathematics wanted to check if there is any relationship between the number of hours a student was absent from class and the score in the final semester examination. The following information was used:
Exam score 48 92 32 56 20 72 16 5 76 80
Hours Absent1 3 2 14 10 14 6 17 8 3 7
Draw a scalter diagram for the data above.
(5mks)
Estimate the correlation coefficient ( r) and comment on the relationship between the exam score and the hours absent from class. (10mks)
Question Four
In a factorial experiment, treatments are a combination of two or more factors, illustrate this.
(5mks)
A researcher designed an experiment to compare the yield potentials of seven (7) bean varieties. Three (3) blocks were used in the experiment set up. Three spacing intervals for beans was used in this study.
Illustrate the treatment combinations in a simple diagram; show the plot layout in this experiment.
(10mks)
Question Five
Illustrate the arrangement of treatment in a Latin square (LS) dosage. (5mks)
Show the sources of variation in a Latin square design. (Use the ANOVA table).
(5mks)
Discuss the use of the p value in decision making in the analysis of variance.
(5mks)
