INSTRUCTIONS:
Answer THREE questions in total. Section A is compulsory.
Answer ONE question from Section B and ONE question from Section c.
SECTION A (Compulsory)
1. With reference to the ‘Code of Conduct for the practice of Journalism in Kenya’, explain a journalist’s responsibility when it comes to:
(i) Accuracy and fairness [10 Marks]
(ii) Covering conflict [5 Marks]
(iii) Recording interviews and telephone conversations. [5 Marks]
SECTION B
2. (i) Describe any THREE of the ethical principles that underlie the study of ethics. [10 Marks]
(ii) Choose ONE of the attached case studies. For the case chosen, discuss the ethical
choices you would be faced with in that situation and how you would handle them. [10 Marks]
3. You are the university’s Public Relations Officer. You have been tasked with overseeing the production of a documentary about the institution. Following a competitive tendering process, the video production company that your spouse works in has been selected to shoot the documentary for the university. Discuss the ethical issues that you are faced with and describe the steps you would take to make a decision that upholds ethical standards in practice of public relations. [20 Marks]
SECTION C
4. Lying, deception and dishonesty are so common in contemporary society that truth is sometimes overlooked as a fundamental value. Explain the importance of telling the truth as one of the communicator’s values. [20 Marks]
5. In times of tragedy, journalists have been accused of exploiting the victims’ grief for the sake of having a news story. Describe the ethical standards you would keep in mind when interviewing the victims of a tragedy, and the rights that the victim has. [20 Marks]
