Answer three questions
Question one is compulsory
1. With reference to representative texts, explain and illustrate the key characteristics of the following phases in the development of East African fiction.
(i) The colonial phase
(ii) The nationalist phase
(iii) The postcolonial phase. [30 Marks]
2. Evaluate any novel covered in this course and show how the style used in it has been influenced by the oral mode. [20 Marks]
3. East African fiction dramatizes the changing values and trends in the region. By close reference to the short stories “Leaving’ and “The War of Ears” assess the validity of the above observation. [20 Marks]
4. Clearly explain the centrality of Ngugi Wa Thiong’o in the growth and development of East African fiction. [20 Marks]
5. Explain the relevance of studying Timothy Wangusa’s novel, Once upon this Mountain, to our contemporary experiences in East Africa. [20 Marks]
