Answer all the Questions.
QUESTION ONE
A competitive position analysis was conducted for four tailors that constituted a cluster in the tailoring industry in Kenya. The key success factors considered were location, charges, workmanship, and customer care, weighted 10%, 20%, 40%, and 30% respectively. Scores out of 10 for tailor A were 6, 4, 2, and 8 for location, charges, customer care and workmanship respectively. For tailor B scores were 4, 2, 7 and 5 for location, charges, customer care, and workmanship respectively. Tailor C scores were 4, 7, 5 and 10 for location, charges, customer care and workmanship respectively. Tailor D scores were 4, 3, 10 and 2 for location, charges, customer care and workmanship respectively.
Required:
(a) Competitive position analysis for the four tailors. [10 marks]
(b) Which tailor is second best in the cluster? Advise the tailor on how to stake out a leading position in the cluster during the next analysis. [10 marks]
QUESTION TWO
(a) Over the last two decades the business environment in Kenya has undergone various changes. It has become more complex and dynamic. Using relevant examples, discuss the effect of this development on corporate strategic behaviour in Kenya. [12 marks]
(b) What is the value of internal analysis for a firm? How would you apply the functional approach to identify a firm’s strengths and weaknesses? [8 marks]
QUESTION THREE
(a) What is meant by strategy operationalization during implementation? [4 marks]
(b) Explain how you would restructure an organization to institutionalize a strategy in
the organization. [16 marks]
QUESTION FOUR
(a) An organization has discovered a threat in the market because its potential customers take unnecessarily too long searching for information regarding the organization. Discuss how this is a threat, highlighting the strategies the organization could adopt to address the threat. [12 marks]
(b) Even when the mobile industry in Kenya had only two players, rivalry between the two was “cut throat”. Discuss, highlighting the forces that drive industry rivalry. [8 marks]
QUESTION FIVE
(a) Explain how stakeholder resistance can be avoided or reduced in strategy implementation. [8 marks]
(b) Strategic objectives are usually set on certain aspects of the organization. Explain, giving suitable illustrations of a possible objective for each aspect. [12 marks]
