SECTION A: 30 Marks
Attempt all questions in this Section.
Q1. (a) Outline the socio-economic importance of goats. [5 marks]
(b) List three common dairy goat breeds common in the Kenyan highlands.
[3 marks]
Q2. (a) Suggest four measures that would ensure there is minimum stress at
weaning in goats. [6 marks]
(b) Explain the importance of castration and state any two castration methods
that can be used in goats. [4 marks]
Q3. Explain why growth rate is considered an important trait in meat goats. [6 marks]
Q4. In respect to the reproductive cycle of the goat, define the term “post-parturition interval” and briefly explain its significance in goat production. [6 marks]
SECTION B: 40 Marks
Answer any two questions
Q5. A large scale goat production farm has approached you for advice with an aim of improving meat production. Identify the key factors that normally determine performance and briefly discuss the approach you would use to improve the overall performance of the flock. [20 marks]
Q6. Suggest various strategies the farmer can employ on his/her farm in order to secure
good health in his/her flock of goats. [20 marks]
Q7. Explain the feeding of a flock of does around the mating time. [20 marks]
