1. a) There are various ways of acquiring knowledge about various phenomena including
the way of science. Briefly describe these ways of knowing and explain why the
scientific method of inquiry is considered superior. (10 mks)
b) In the research process, why is the problem definition stage probably the most
important stage? Discuss the characteristics of a good research problem. (8 mks)
c) Using suitable examples, distinguish between the following terms:
i) Conceptual definition and operational definition. (4 mks)
ii) Intervening variable and moderating variable. (4 mks)
iii) Conceptual framework and theoretical framework. (4 mks)
2. a) What is a research design? (5 mks)
b) Research design is a concept that may be viewed from various perspectives. With the
help of relevant examples, discuss any three perspectives. (15 mks)
3. Citing relevant examples, discuss the major threats to internal validity of a research and
indicate how each can be controlled. (20 mks)
4. a) To quantity properties or characteristics of objects, social scientists use various scales
of measurement. Describe these scales of measurement. (8 mks)
b) Discuss any two data analysis techniques appropriate for each of the scales of
measurement to test for relationships between variables. (12 mks)
5. a) What is data analysis? (4 mks)
b) Distinguish between parametric and non-parametric tests and explain the conditions
which will favour the use of each for analysis of research data. (16 mks)
