1. (a) Define the following terms in language study: [10 marks]
(i) Onomatopoeic sounds

(b) With suitable examples, distinguish between specificallycommunicative and unintentionallyinformative signals of language. [6 marks]

2. Discuss the following properties of human languages:

3. With suitable examples, explain what it is a person knows when he/she is said to
know a language. [20 marks]
4. Explain the physiological adaptations of human beings that enable them to produce speech, unlike all the other creatures. [20 marks]
5. (a) Discuss the Natural Sound Source theory of language origins and present its
weaknesses. [12 marks]
(b) What are the weaknesses of the Divine Source theory of language origin?
