1. (a) Explain your understanding of the term language family. [3 marks]
(b) State two language family tree limitations. [2 marks]
(c) Identify any two closest genetic relations of English. [2 marks]
(d) Name three factors for similarities of language apart from genetic
relationships. [3 marks]
(e) Using examples, explain the meaning of the following terms:
(i) Isolating language [3 marks]
(ii) Inflection language [3 marks]
(iii) Second language [3 marks]
(iv) Lingua Franca [3 marks]
(f) With illustrations, explain the term language spread. [3 marks]
(g) State four characteristics of ‘new varieties’ of English. [4 marks]
(h) Name one Anglosaxon dialect. [1 mark]
2. Over the years, linguists have discussed various approaches used in the development
of English. Discuss the four major approaches used in the spread of English.

3. With examples, discuss the following concepts:
(i) Case (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive). [10 marks]
(ii) Inflections of nouns in Old English [10 marks]
4. State and explain changes that took place in English in the three stages in the origins
and development of English. [20 marks]
5. With the aid of appropriate examples:
(i) Define standard and dialect language [10 marks]
(ii) Contrast American English and British English [10 marks]
