Section A – Answer all the questions (30 Marks)
1. (a) What are fossil records? [1 mark]
(b) What is the importance of fossil records to biologists? [1 mark]
(c) Explain three ways in which scientists are able to show that organisms

2. (a) With an example explain binomial nomenclature. [2 marks]
(b) Differentiate between analogous and homologous structures in evolution
of organisms. [2 marks]

3. (a) Explain the threats facing herpes conservation in Kenya. [2 marks]
(b) Using examples, explain the ecological importance of amphibians and reptiles.

4. (a) Using examples, explain three different mating systems found in birds, mammals
and reptiles. [6 marks]
(b) Name four birds families endemic to Africa. [2 marks]
5. Giving examples, explain the importance of insects in our ecosystems. [5 marks]

6. Using a named mammalian species, discuss its ecology, habitat, diet, social organization, reproduction behavior and its conservation. [20 marks]
7. With examples, describe how past human history in East Africa have affected its fauna.

8. Discuss ethics and principles that should be followed when bird watching or studying birds. [20 marks]
