Question 1
Eldo-Systec Co Ltd has been registering huge losses due to inefficiencies associated with its manual database systems. The company has decided to computerize its database system in order to improve its service delivery. Assuming that you have been hired to set up the new database solution, advise the company about:
(i) The criteria that should be used in selecting the most suitable Database Management System for the company. (8 marks)

(ii) The approaches that should be used to secure Database Management Systems on the Web. (8 marks)

(iii) The heuristics that should be applied to improve the processing of a query. (8 marks)

(iv) The importance of transactions as units of operation in a secure Database Management Systems (6 marks)


Question 2
Maendeleo Co Ltd is planning to advertise various positions of personnel who are expected to perform the duties related to database design and management. Give advice:
(a) About the various positions that should be established and specify the duties associated with each position. (10 marks)

(b) Describe the main phases of database design (10 marks)



Question 3
(a) XYZ Co Ltd has invited you to orientate its newly recruited database administration personnel in matters pertaining to its databases. Comment about:

(i) The Structured Query Language (SQL) aggregate functions as defined by ISO (6 marks)

(ii) The types of integrity constraints (6 marks)

(b) By using a suitable example, explain how the concept of full functional dependency relates to 2NF. (8 marks)


Question 4
(a) The consistency and reliability aspects of transactions are due to the “ACIDity” properties of transactions. By using relevant examples, explain how each of these properties relates to concurrency control and recovery mechanisms. (12 marks)
(b) Describe the characteristics of a table in unnormalized form (UNF) and explain how the table is converted to a First Normal Form (1NF) relation.
