Question 1
a) Describe any three applications of local area networks. (5marks)

b) State and explain five threats to computer network security. (5marks)

c) Describe the counter measures you would implement to solve threats above.
(5marks)

d) Given the following scenario, describe how you would research, identify, prioritize and resolve this network problem:
The network has been running well at the site of a small manufacturer. However, a user in the quality control division now calls to report that she is unable to get the daily status reports printed by the printer in the department. Meanwhile, the shipping department reports that a rerouted print job did not print in the quality control department. What is your strategy for solving this network problem?

a) Describe any three tools used to troubleshoot network problems. (6marks)

b) Discuss four functions of a systems administrator. (8marks)

c) Describe the advantages of a server-based network. (3marks)

d) Describe the process of creating user accounts and groups in an environment of your choice. (8marks)

The international organization for standardization defines five areas of network management. Discuss each of the given areas.

Question 5
A company that manufactures tiles and bricks has asked you to install and economical computer network that will bring it up-to-date in communication technology and be flexible enough to allow for future expansion.
The company is located in a single storey building at the outskirts of Nairobi, it has 30 employees, 10 computers (one of which is connected to the internet, 2 printers and 1 fax machine). The company’s network goal is to:
• Network the existing computers so that they can share information and printers
• Add two additional computers to the network; one for the Product Design Group and one for the manufacturing department.
• Allow for the possible addition of three computers at a later date.
• Provide an internet connection for the product design group.

a) Discuss five factors you would consider in the choice of whether the network should be a peer-to-peer or a server-based network. (10marks)

b) Explain any five types of network topologies. State the topology you would choose for the given scenario. (10marks)

c) i) Describe the advantages of a peer-to-peer network. (3marks)

ii) State two disadvantages of server based networks. (2marks)

a) Using examples distinguish between guided and unguided transmission media.
(5marks)

b) Describe three transmission media imperfections that may cause impairment in the signal sent through the medium. (6marks)

c) State and explain three factors you can use to measure the performance of a transmission media. (6marks)

d) “The inherent difficulty of setting up cable networks is a factor that will continue to push wireless environments towards greater acceptance”. Describe four situations where wireless connectivity can be especially useful for networking. (8marks)
