Mass media has played an important role as an agent of change in Africa. But some scholars argue that the media has little influence on people`s attitude once they have formed an opinion.
a) Discuss the relationship between audiences and mass media in terms of cultural selection (15marks)
b) What approaches can be used to integrate mass media into reform interventions? (15marks)

SECTION B
Question 2
Mass media practice in Africa is heavily influenced by ownership, funding and regulation. Discuss the public and community media in an environment perceived as deeply controlled and hostile to media investment. (20marks)

Question 3
Africa has experienced an upsurge in the number of private mass media in the last 20 years. Describe the activities and events that have sparked this sudden growth of mass media on the continent. (20marks)

The “Propaganda Model” according to Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman views private mass media as Businesses interested in the sale of a product to other businesses rather than the business of selling quality news and information to the public. Explain the product and the businesses using the five filters, that the two scholars suggest determine the type of news and information presented in private mass media. (20marks)

Mass media on the African continent have unique characteristics drawn from dynamic elements that have influenced their structure and formation. Explain the social and political factors that have shaped Africas mass media. (20marks)
