Question One
a) A research was carried out to find out whether teaching methods
influence performance in class. The class was randomly divided into three groups and a different method of teaching used for each group as follows:
Group one: Lecture method
Group two: Discussion method
Group three: Individual study method
The researcher gave a test and obtained the following results from each group.
Group 1 (lecture) P1 = 60
Group 2 (Discussion) P2 = 45
Group 3 (Individual study P3 = 55
i) State the independent variable
ii) State the dependent variable
iii) What is the hypothesis being tested in this research?
iv) The dependent variable here is measured at five interval scale while the independent variable is measured at the nominal scale. Differentiate between the two types of scales ie (nominal and interval scales)
v) What instruments would you use to collect data in this kind of research?
b) Discuss at least FOUR ethical issues concerning research subjects.
c) What challenges are encountered by in the selection of the research
topic?

a) Define the term literature review. (2marks)
b) What are some of the purposes of literature review? (6marks)
c) Write short notes on the following:
i) Theoretical framework
ii) Conceptual framework
iii) Operational framework. (12marks)

Question Three
Define the term reliability and discuss the THREE types of reliability in regard to questionnaires. (20marks)

Question Four
a) What are the advantages of using stratified sampling method? (6marks)
b) Using suitable illustrations where necessary discuss the attributes of a
good research problem. (6marks)
c) What would you say are the limitation of a survey research? (8marks)

Question Five
In the following situations, decide whether you would used personal interview telephone survey or self administered questionnaire and give your reasons for each.
a) A survey of the residents of a residential district of Nairobi on why they happened to select the area to live in. You would also wish to obtain some information about what they live and do not live about life in the area.
b) A poll of students in KeMU University on their preferences among three candidates who are running for the chairmanship of the students union.
c) A survey of KeMU personnel to determine their views on a range of managerial issues and how their issues affect their ability to satisfy the requirements of their customers.
