1. Answer QUESTION ONE and any other TWO questions from section B.
2. This is a CLOSED BOOK exam. No reference materials are allowed in the exam room.
3. No mobile phone allowed in the exam room (make sure to switch it off and leave it with the invigilator if you carried one).

SECTION A (COMPULSORY) [30 MARKS]

QUESTION ONE (COMPULSORY) [30 MARKS]

(a) Distinguish between system software and application software. Give at least two examples of each. [4 marks]

(b) With relevant illustrations, explain the difference between LAN and WAN types of computer networks. [3 marks]

(c) Explain the difference between RAM and ROM in relation to computer storage. [3 marks]

(d) Explain the terms volatile and non-volatile in relation to computer memory. [3 marks]

(e) Explain the proper procedure of shutting down a computer. Why is it important to follow this procedure when you can simply switch off the main socket? [3 marks]


(f) Computers are prone to security threats from the outside world. Your friend can also pose a security threat to your computer; explain measures you would take to protect your data and programs stored in your computer. [5 marks]

(g) What is a web browser? Give at least 2 examples. [3 marks]

(h) Explain the difference between a bit and a byte. [3 marks]

(i) Explain the relevance of spreadsheet software and presentation software in a school such as a secondary school. [3 marks]

(a) Using a well labeled diagram, explain the role of the various functional components of a computer. [10 marks]

(b) Explain how a simple IF function works. Write the syntax for the simple IF function in MS Excel. [5 marks]

QUESTION FOUR [15 MARKS]
(a) Discuss four measures of avoiding attacks/crime on the Internet. [8 marks]

(b) Computer software is one of the major components in a computer. Explain why software is considered the major component in a computer. In relation to your answer, explain the role of Operating System software in a computer. [7 marks]


QUESTION FIVE [15 MARKS]

(a) In computer networks, explain what communications media is. With relevant examples, explain the two major types of communications media [9 marks]

(b) After purchasing a computer, you just discovered that some of the work you intended to accomplish such as playing games could not be done. After consultation, you learnt that you can increase your computer’s abilities. Explain any THREE ways you might have learnt to increase the abilities of your computer. [6 marks]
