Question 1
a) Define sociology and discuss its importance as a course of study (5marks)
b) Think of examples of material culture that you use daily: Stove, automobile, telephone, refrigerator, money and so forth. How do these material objects influence your way of life and the way you interact with others? How would your behavior be different if these material objects, say watches or cars did not exist? (10marks)
c) Considering the Macro and Micro level approaches in Sociology, which one do you think better explains social life? Why? (7marks)
d) Think about a significant social conflict or change and how it influences any one the following social institutions – family, education, religion, politics, economics, science, sports or health care. How might a significant change in one institution? (8marks)

Question 2
a) How can symbolic interaction and rational choice perspectives help explain dating behavior? For example, what might a good night kiss versus sexual intercourse mean to female versus males? (7.5marks)
b) Imagine that you are a legislator representing your constituency or county. You have to decide whether to cut funding for a program for senior citizens or slash scholarship program for college students. You know that approximately 90 per cent of and 20 per cent 18 to 22 year olds are registered to vote. What would you do, and how would you justify your decision? How does this example illustrate conflict theory. (7.5marks)

b) Explain the importance of language for culture. (4marks)
c) i) What do you mean by socialization? (2marks)
ii) What dilemmas do you think might be created for children when the formal and informal agents of socialization provide different messages about values or acceptable behaviors? Is this contradiction something that we should be concerned about? Why or why not. (5marks)

a) How might education be important to countries competing in the world system? How might education be affected by global events, such as a war or a world wide economic recession? (5marks)
b) How do slavery, caste, and class systems of social stratification differ? (6marks)
c) In what ways does technology change society? (4marks)

ii) Write short notes on Diffusion of culture. (4marks)
b) Some people think that making birth control, especially condoms, readily available will bring down teen pregnancy rates. Others argue that making birth control available would provide and enticement or an invitation to sexual experimentation at a young age and would undermine strong families. What is your view and why? (7marks)
