Question One
Think of examples of material culture that you use daily: Stove, automobile, telephone, refrigerator, money. How do these material objects influence your way of life and the way you interact with others. How would your behavior be different if these material objects, say watches, mobile phones, or cars did not exist? Explain.

Describe your own lifestyles and life chances. How do these relate to your socialization experience and your family’s position in the stratification system. What difference do they make in your life?

Write short notes on the following:
Culture lag
Culture complex
Primary groups and secondary groups
Culture diffusion

Think about a significant social conflict or change and how it influences any one of the following social institutions – family, education, religion, politics, economics, science, sports or health care. How might a significant change in one institution affect stability or change in another institution?

Question Three
Place yourself in the center of the social world model, working outward from micro-level interactions towards the macro-level institutions, indicate what has influenced where you fall in the stratification system.

Question Four
What are your statutes? Which ones are ascribed and which are achieved statutes? How do these statutes affect the way you interact with others in your network of relationships? (20 Marks)

Question Five
Sociology provides insight into the biases of corporately owned mass media. But mass media can also be used by community groups to promote change. Discuss.
(10 Marks)
Sociology is both scientific and humanistic. Show how both have been influenced in the development of sociology.
