C.A.T.1 TIME: 1 ½

Instructions: Answer All Questions.

1.(a) Define the following terms:-

(i) atomic mass (ii) isotope.(2 mks each)

(b) A sample of naturally occurring silicon consists of 28Si (mass=27.0769amu), 29Si (mass=28.9756amu). and 30Si (mass=29.9738amu).If the atomic mass of silicon is 28.0855 amu and natural abundance of 29Si is 4.67% answer the following questions.

(i) Explain clearly what is meant by the statement "the atomic mass of silicon is 28.0855 amu".( 2 mks)

(ii) Determine the natural abundances of 28Si,and 30Si.(4 mks)

(iii) Given that 1 amu= 1.6605x10-24g calculate the number of silicon atoms that are present in 3.0g of silicon.

[Avogadro's number=6.0220x1023]

2.(a) Define each of the following terms:-

(i) Limiting reagent.

(ii) theoretical yield.

(iii) Actual yield .

(iv) percentage yield.(2 mks each)

(b) Ozone (O3) in the stratosphere can react with nitric oxide (NO) that is discharged from the high altitude planes according to the following equation.

O3(g)+NO(g)-----)O2(g)+NO2(g)

If 260.74 of ozone gas were reacted with 0.67g of nitrogen (II) oxide, NO.

(i) Determine the mass (in grams) of NO2 that would be produced.[N=14.00 O=16.00] (6 mks)

(ii) Deduce the limiting reagent in the above reaction.Explain your answer.(3 mks)

(iii) Calculate the number of moles of the excess reagent remaining at the end of the reaction.(5 mks)

(iv) If 600 mg of NO2 is actually produced, calculate the percentrage yield of NO2.(6 mks)

3.(a) Define each of the following terms:-

(i) morality (ii) parts per million (ppm).(2 mks)

(b) A 0.5M sample of sulphuric acid solution was analyzed by taking 100ml portion and adding to it 50ml of 0.2 M NaOH(aq). After the reaction excess OH-(aq) ions remained in the solution. This excess base required 13.21 ml of a 0.13 M HCL solution for complete neutralization.

Determine the molarity of the original sulphuric acid sample.(8 mks)

4.(a) Distinguish between empirical and molecular formulae.( 4 mks)

(b) Terephthalic, a carboxylic acid in analysis was found to contain carbon 57.79 % by mass and hydrogen 3.62 % by mass. The molar mass of the acid is 166g/mol.Calculate the empirical and molecular formulae of the acid.

[H=1.00, C=12.00, 0=16.00](8 mks)

5.(a) State at least two of Bohr's postulates.(4 mks)
