Question 1
Read the following case study and answer part (a)
Audiotech Electronics was founded in 1959 by a father and son working out of the garage to manufacture television station control consoles. Today, Audiotech employs 75 and currently operates a 35,000-square –foot factory in Birmingham, Alabama, and has two wholly owned subsidiaries. The company now manufactures control consoles for television and radio stations and recording studios. The company’s products are used by all the major broadcast and cable networks, including Cable News Network (CNN).
When Audiotech began, its custom –made console for recording studios were not widely available. Within a few years, the company switched from custom manufacturing to larger production to reduce the cost of its consoles and expand into new market more rapidly. The company is involved in every facet of production –designing the system, installing the circuits in its computer boards, and even manufacturing and painting the metal cases housing the consoles. The success of the metal –working division led to it being spun off as a separate subsidiary that does complete metal stamping, finishing, and painting. The second subsidiary manufactures tape playback cartridge machines and accessories for radio station.
Audiotech consoles have unique features designed to meet specific customer needs. The Xenon series television console, for example, was the first marketed specifically for television stations. High-tech console modified for use in television stations can cost $300, 000, but the Audiotech model costs less than half that amount. The Xenon models incorporate features traditionally founded in recording systems, producing more sophisticated sounds quality. The firm’s newest products allow television correspondents to simultaneously here and communicate with their counterparts in different locations. Such specialized products are potentially useful in every country with radio and television stations and recording studios.
Sales of Auditech consoles have historically been strong in the United States but recently have stabilized, and little growth is occurring. Key personnel in the company are investigating the possibility of expanding the market for their product internationally.
