The Case for Social Entrepreneurship
The concept of entrepreneurship, long hallowed in the context of business and economic ventures been increased used in the context of social problem solving. Social entrepreneurs contribute to an economy by providing and alternative business model for firms to trade commercially in an environmentally and socially sustainable way, and also provide an alternative delivery system for public services such as health, education, housing and community support.
While the concept of social entrepreneurship (SE) is relatively new, initiatives that employ entrepreneurial capacities to solve problems are not. The field of SE entrepreneurship however is growing rapidly and is attracting interest from many stakeholders who are keen with the development agenda. The reasons behind the growing popularity of SE are many. On the most basic level, there is something inherently interesting and appealing about entrepreneurs and the stories of why and how they do what they do. SE signals the imperative to drive social change, and its potential to pay off, with its lasting, transformational benefit to society, that sets the field and its practitioners apart.
The growing popularity of SE notwithstanding, its real meaning still remains unclear. As a result, SE has become so inclusive that it now has an immense tent which all manner of socially beneficial activities fit.
