Case Study
The State of Kenyan Youths
Youth represents 30 per cent of Kenya’s population and their unemployment is twice the country’s average. Almost one third of Kenyans are between 15 and 29 years and the total reached almost 11 million people in 2006 (compared to 8.5 million in 1999)
According to the KPLA this age cohort is now at historical high in absolute and relative terms). Youth in Kenya face serious challenges including high rates of unemployment and under employment. The overall unemployment for the youth is double the adult average at about 21 per cent. Statistics on joblessness suggest that the magnitude of the unemployment problem is larger for youth with 38 per cent of youth neither in school nor working (aggregated the rates of reported unemployment and inactivity) The violence in early 2008 highlighted the critical importance of addressing and in particular the increasing problem of idle youth.
In addition the country social analysis (World Bank 2007) found that youths unemployed, especially among males is a major contributor to frustration and tension and particular in urban areas. Clearly unemployment among the youth has now become a matter of serious policy concern in the country. Evidence form previous analytical work show that lack of action on the challenges that affect the youth will escalate both the social and economic costs of development in Kenya.
