The heights of a group of 10 students randomly selected from a given school are as follows (in fts) 5.5, 3.5, 4.6, 6.1, 5.7, 5.11, 4.9, 5.0, 5.5, 5.0

Find the mean height and absolute deviation from the mean.

Use the following data to

Plot a cumulative frequency curve.

(3 marks)

Find the first, second and third quartiles of the data using the curve.

(3 marks)

Calculate the interquatile range.

(2 marks)

Question Two

The students of a certain school were pulled to find out what their hobbies were. The number of hobbies each student has was then recorded and the data obtained was grouped into classes shown in the table below. Using assumed mean of 17, find the mean of the number of hobbies of the students in the school.

No. of hobbies 0-4 5-9 10-14 15-19 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-40
Frequency 45 58 27 30 19 11 8 2

If the mean height of a group of students is equal to 170cm with a standard deviation (s) of 10cm what is the Z-value for:

180 cm?

(3 marks)

160cm?

(2 marks)

Supposed X is a normal random variable with a mean of 120 and a standard deviation of 20. Determine the probability that X is greater than 135.

(3 marks)

If the test score of 400 students are normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 10s approximately how many students scored between 90 and 110?

(2 marks)

Question Three
The time required for works to complete a certain task is normally distributed with a mean of 30 minutes and standard deviation of 9 minutes. If a random sample of 25 workers is drawn from the work force find the probability that the mean completion time for the sample of workers is between 28 and 33 minutes. (10 marks)

Question Four

An Insurance Company is reviewing its current policy rates. When originally setting the rates they believed that the average claim around is $1,800. They are concerned that the true mean is actually higher than this, because they could potentially lose a lot of money. They randomly selected 40 claims and calculated sample mean of $1,950. Assuming that the std deviation of the claims is $500 and set =05. Test to see if the insurance company should be concerned. State whether you reject or accept the null hypothesis.

(10 marks)

A sample of 40 sales receipts from a grocery store has X=$137 and s =$ 30.2. Use these values to test whether or not the mean of sales at the grocery store are different from $150. State whether you reject or accept the null hypothesis.
