Explain the meaning of the following terms

(8marks)
a) Segregation
b) Independent assortment
c) Epistasis
d) Polygenic character
2.
Let the amount of DNA in the nucleus of a cell at the beginning of interphase be x.
What will be the amount present at :-

(4marks)
a) The end of interphase
b) The end of mitosis
c) The end of first meiotic division

Three population of birds P, Q, and R live separately on three oceanic islands X, Y
and Z respectively. The birds all eat insects and nectar but have different beaks and
plumage. The islands are set throughout the year by strong prevailing winds in the
direction of X, Y and Z. Populations P and Q can interbreed and produce a fertile
offspring. Population Q can mate with population R but the young are sterile. Mating
does not occur at all between P and R. From your knowledge of the way evolution
works, explain how successful breeding occurs between P and Q but not between P
and R or Q and R

5.
In drosophila, black body colour is recessive to grey body colour. A geneticist had
three pairs of flies with grey bodies designated A, B and C. He crossed A x B and
obtained 109 grey bodied flies. A x C gave 80 grey bodied and 28 black bodied while
B x C gave 78 grey bodied flies. Explain, giving reasons the expected genotypic and
phenotypic ratios when the flies A, B and C are crossed with flies having black
bodies.
