Answer ALL questions from SECTION A and TWO questions selected from SECTION B
SECTION A: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (50 MINUTES 3 MARKS EACH)
1. Discuss briefly the factors that influence the development and direction of flow of ocean currents.
2. Discuss the main parameters considered in describing ocean current. How are these parameters estimated?
3. What is the main distinguishing factor between benthic and pelagic marine organisms. State the main categories of pelagic organisms based on size.
4. Deep sea ocean circulation involves large and deep water masses. Briefly discuss how these deep water masses are developed and circulated.
5. State and explain how the following physical and chemical parameters affect distribution of marine organisms
a. Sunlight
b. Salinity
c. Oxygen
6. Give a brief description of the kinds of habitats for marine microorganisms and higher organisms found in the sea.
7. What are radiolarians?
8. Describe the reproduction process in diatoms.
9. Describe the role of mercury in biofouling in the marine environments.
10. Give a brief account of bacteria occurring in hot springs and their interaction with the giant tube worm.

SECTION B: ESSAY QUESTIONS (70 MINUTES: 20 MARKS EACH)
Write an essay on any two of the following topics.
1. Bacteria flagellation and tactic movements.
2. The beneficial role of marine microorganisms and other resources from the sea.
3. Discuss microbial associations with marine vertebrate. Compare the situation in healthy and diseased individuals.
4. Discuss the importance of microorganisms in environmental situations.
