QUESTION ONE: (20 MARKS)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow it. Write your answers in
complete sentences and paragraphs.
Kenya, as a developing country, has for the last decade or so undergone its worst economic times since
independence in 1963. The main sectors of the economy, such as agriculture and manufacturing,
performed below expectations leading to many of their employees being relieved of their jobs. The
years of 1980s and 1990s were like a Dark period for parents, farmers, investors and even external
donors. Production statistics revealed that the economy was in real decline, especially when external
investors started to re-locate to neighbouring countries in large numbers.
The country must now, however, start to forget the past and pursue the very ambitious but attainable
economic growth target of seven per cent per year. It will be important for all Kenyans to focus on this
goal and suggest how it can be achieved. Development analysts argue that Kenya is capable of
developing its economy through the productive resources available in each region of this country.
They strongly recommend that every district and region of this country should map out what they can
grow or produce at the lowest cost and, subsequently, sell at the highest possible price. The analysts
also believe, that value can also be added to the agricultural produce at farm level. This can be
undertaken through processing the farm produce such as is done for milk fruits and vegetables.
1
Branding of these products, packaging them accordingly, shall add value to the farm products, that
is, giving them a trade name such as “Kemera Green Vegetables”, and packaging them
accordingly, shall add value to the farm products in the market. It has also been suggested that it
will make economic sense to Kenyans living near rivers, lakes and the Indian Ocean. If they do
not just fish and sell fish by-products. Instead, they should also brand their fish and transform
fish by-products into saleable products.
Branding and packaging arc two factors that these farmers do not seem to take seriously. An item
intended for the market, once properly packaged and branded sells in substantial volumes. Today
buyers will need attractively packaged items if they have to keep buying.
Higher economic growth in the rural areas can be achieved if the rural communities are able to
concentrate on agricultural crops and livestock that naturally thrive in their zones. It is not
profitable to farmers in one region, for instance, to grow maize which takes nine months to be
ready, whereas in a nearby one. The crop takes about half the time and the yield per acre is
considerably higher. The respective farmers should focus on efficient production systems and
marketing of whatever does well in their area. Farm produce that cannot be economically grown
in an area should be imported from other parts of Kenya or even from other countries, by traders
who will offer them to the consumers at competitive prices.
Our economy can further be improved by cutting back on wastage of perishable farm produce.
For instance, fruit and vegetables which normally get wasted when they are in season can be
dried since this does not lessen their nutritional value. Minimal food loss can, therefore, be easily
attained through use of modern preservation technology. Marketing of these products can be
aggressively done by committees crated though the local councils. The committees can also
make an effort to attract investors to their areas.
Investors and other people interested in the economic growth of Kenya should feel duty-bound to
spread effective and meaningful agricultural practices throughout the country. They should
encourage the local communities to think globally and act locally, given the current highly
competitive world markets. Since a buyer will go to another seller for a cheaper and more

qualitative products, it will be necessary for Kenyan marketers to work more closely with
farmers. This shall enable the farmers to brand their goods with attractive names and package
them accordingly. These markets demand quality products of competitive prices.
