Voltage iii. Current (3 Marks) g) If you use an ordinary electric lamp with a frosted bulb to cast a shadow of your hand on the wall, are all parts of the shadow equally down? Why? QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a) A light ray in air enters a transparent material at an angle of 47° with respect to the normal. After refraction it made an angle of 32.5° with respect to the normal. Find i. The refractive index of the material ii. The velocity of light in the material. iii. The wavelength of the light in the material. ( 9 Marks) b) A narrow beam of minochromatic light in air is incident on a plane boundary between air and glass such that the angle between the beam and the boundary is 30°. If the refractive index of the glass is 1.5. i. Through what angle will the beam be bent on refraction? ii. What is the critical angle between the glass and air? (7 Marks) c) Highlight the main components of the fibre optic cable and describe how it works. (4 Marks)
QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)
a) A magnifying glass of focal length 5cm is used to magnify a small object held 4cm from the optical centre of the lens. Calculate the; i. Location ii. Magnification and describe the nature of the image formed. (7 Marks) b) The focal length of a lens is found to be 10cm. Find how far you would place it from an illuminated slide to obtain on a screen which was magnified five times. Give two characteristics of the image – other than it is magnified. (7 Marks) c) A converging lens of power diopters is used in a pair of spectacles Calculate; i. The focal length ii. The position of the image it forms of an object placed 25cm from its optical centre. (6 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS) a) The isotope 234 92 ? undergoes an alpha, negative beta and gamma ray emissions in that order. Write the process equations showing the daughter nuclide formed. (5 Marks) b) Derive the radioactive decay equation starting with a radioactive sample with nuclides N0. (5 Marks) c) Draw the x-ray tube and explain how it works and the microscopic production of x- rays. (10 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a) A 9? and a 6? resistor are connected in series with a power supply.

i. The voltage drop across the 6? resistor is measured and found to be 12v. Find the voltage output of the power supply. ii. The two resistors are connected in parallel across a power supply and the current through the 9? resistor is found to be a 25A. Find the voltage setting of the power supply. (9 Marks) b) A rectangular block of copper has sides of length 10cm, 20cm and 40cm. if the block is connected to a 6v source across opposite faces of the rectangular block, what is i. The maximum ii. The minimum current that can be carried? (Resistivity of copper 1.7 × 10-8???). (8 Marks) c) Two point charges of magnitude 3nC and 6nC are separated by a distance of 0.3m. Find the electric force of repulsion between them. (?? = 9.0 × 109????2??-2). (3 Marks)
