a) Discuss the following fluid properties i. Density or mass density (2 Marks) ii. Specific weight (2 Marks) iii. Specific volume (2 Marks) iv. Kimematics and fluid dynamics (2 Marks) b) State pascal law and from first principles and using a fluid element of very small dimensions prove that pressure intensity. (12 Marks) Px=Py=Pz
c) The right limb of a simple U-tube menometer containing mercury is open to the atmosphere, while the left limb is connected to a pipe in which a fluid of 0.9 is flowing specific gravity. The centre of the pipe is 12cm below the level of mercury in the right limb. Find the pressure of fluid in the pipe if the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 20cm. (10 Marks) QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a) A hydraulic press has a ram of 30cm diameter and a plunger of 4.5 cm diameter. Find the weight lifted by the hydraulic press when the force applied at the plunger is 500N (4 Marks) b) By use of neat sketches, distinguish between the following flow measurements devices. i. Venturimeter (3 Marks) ii. Pitot tube (3 Marks)
2
c) A horizontal venturimeter with inlet diameter 20cm and throat diameter 10cm is used to measure the flow of water. Pressure at the inlet is 17.658N/cm2 and the vacuum pressure at the throat is 30cm of mercury. Find the discharge of water through the venturimeter. Take Cd=0.98 ( 10 Marks)
QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)
a) Distinguish between manometers and Mechanical gauges (8 Marks) b) 10m3 of mercury weighs 136 x 104N. Calculate the following parameters (8 Marks) i. Specific weight ii. Specific gravity iii. Mass density iv. Specific volume c) Define FLUID MECHANICS (4 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
a) State the Newton law of Viscosity and using a diagram discuss the various classifications of fluids. (12 Marks) b) If the velocity distribution over a plate is given by u=2 3 y-y2 in which u is the velocity in meters per second at a distance y meters above the plate, determine the shear stress at y=0 and at y=0.15m. take dynamic viscosity of fluid as 8.63 poises ( 8 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a) Distinguish between surface tension and capillarity. (4 Marks) b) The pressure outside the droplet of water of diameter 0.04mm is 10.32N/cm2 (atmospheric pressure) Calculate the pressure within the droplet if surface tension is given as 0.0725N/m water. (6 Marks) c) An orifice meter with orifice diameter 10cm is inserted in a pipe of 20cm diameter. The pressure gauges fitted upstream and downstream of the orifice meter gives the readings of 19.62N/cm2 and 9.81N/cm2 respectively. Co-efficient of discharge for the meter is given as 0.6. Find the discharge of water through the pipe. (10 Marks)
