a. A student has bought a computer for use at home. The computer had the following peripherals: printer, mouse, joystick, plotters. It also had the following specifications: 1.8GHZ, 256MB RAM and 20GB hard disk. i. State the purpose of each peripheral device named above. (4 Marks) ii. Give an example of a hard copy and a soft copy output device. (2 Marks) iii. The student also wanted to play high level interactive games using the computer. State the input device the student can use to play games. (2 Marks) iv. The student also wanted to buy a printer. Advise him on three factors to consider when buying a printer. (3 Marks) b. Differentiate between a mainframe computer and a work station. (2 Marks) c. Identify two elements on windows XP desktop. (2 Marks) d. Discuss four impacts of computer use on society. (8 Marks) e. Add the binary numbers in binary form: i. 100110 and 1001 (2 Marks) ii. 11101 and 1011 (2 Marks) f. Explain any three ergonomic tips that can help a computer user to minimize health hazards resulting from regular usage of computer systems. (3 Marks)

SETCOM SYSTEMS is a company owned by three computer graduates which is two year old. Their business has picked up very fast and they have decided to buy more computers to implement a local area

network (LAN) to link all the computers. They have been told that they need network interface card (NIC) in order to connect to the network.
a. What is NIC and why is it important in data communication in LAN (2 Marks) b. Using diagrams show any three network topologies. (6 Marks) c. Discuss four reasons why a network is better than a standalone machine. (8 Marks) d. Explain two disadvantages of using LAN in an organization. (4 Marks)
QUESTION THREE – 20 MARKS
One of the goals of learning fundamentals of computer systems is to gain knowledge on basic computer hardware and software. A student who has undertaken this course should be able to advise a user on how best the system software should be made available.
The student may advise the user to consider the selection of a bespoke software or the use of an off the shelf software.
Required:
a. Briefly explain what is meant by a bespoke software and an off the shelf (packaged) software. (4 Marks) b. Both approaches can be used to acquire a general purpose package or a specialist package. i. Identify two examples of a general purpose package and two examples of a specialist application package. (4 Marks) ii. Describe three advantages of a general purpose package. (6 Marks) iii. Describe three disadvantages of a general purpose package. (6 Marks)
