QUESTION ONE – (30 MARKS)
WORK / LIFE BALANCE
In a recent survey by some researchers it was found that Kenyan employees are the least likely to take a break with only a few taking their annual leave. Many employees feel the need to cut down their hours and feel that paid work has increasingly become more important.
The need for work/life balance is more prominent as ever as many generation X and Y employees focus on the need for a more balanced lifestyle (they value leisure time). Work/life balance international 2011 in their 2010 survey recognized that this issue clearly impacted negatively upon employees, revealing that full-time employees were finding work/life balance increasingly difficult to achieve.
Many employers and employees have found various mutually beneficial solutions to achieving work life balanced such as part time work, working from home and working flexible hours. This trend has portrayed a fundamental shift in the job market. Pocock (2003) has four part-time work to be one of the most frequently used flexible work arrangement to support work and family obligations.
(a) How can the problems associates with work life balance be addressed by management? (5 Marks) (b) Employees quality of work life is becoming a business issue. Discuss. (10Marks) (c) Absenteeism and job stress are a product of work-life balance. Explain. (5 Marks)

(a) Define the term collective bargaining. (4 Marks) (b) By use of examples explain the concept of “Good faith and bad faith bargaining” (8 Marks) (c) What are the contributing factors in the limited success in workers participation in management? How would you improve on this aspect so as to popularize it with all stakeholders in work situation? (8 Marks)
