QUESTION ONE – (30 MARKS)
(a) Distinguish between the following terms as used in statistics;
(i) A population parameter and a sample statistic
(ii) A nominal variable and an ordinal variable (6 Marks)
(b) Find the interquartile range of the data set below and represent the samE data in a box
and whisker diagram.

(c) A treatment known to have 72% chances of success was used on seven patients. Find the
probability that:
(i) Exactly four got well (2 Marks)
(ii) At least four got well (4 Marks)
(d) A random sample of 25 patients was taken from a hospital and the number of days each
patient had spent in hospital before being discharged was recorded. The mean was found
to be 10 days with a standard deviation of 2 days.

(i) Construct the 99% confidence interval for the mean time of hospitalization.
(3 Marks)
(ii) Find the probability that a patient selected at random will stay in that hospital
more than 8 days. (3 Marks)
(e) The manufacturers of a new analgesic drug claim that the drug relieves pain faster than
panadol. The new drug was used on seven patients and the average time it took before
relieving the pain was 5.3 minutes with a standard deviation of 1.7 minutes. When
panadol was used on 8 patients, it took an average time of 7.0 minutes with a standard
deviation of 2.0 minutes. Test the claim at 0.01 level of significance. (6 Marks)

In a research involving health workers in a hospital, the number of years of experience was
recorded as follows:

QUESTION FOUR – (20 MARKS)
To find if the number of days that pupils fall sick was affected by the stage of development and
the district of residence, a researcher obtained the following data from a local primary school;

(a) Find the totals for each row and for each column. (6 Marks)
(b) Use Chi-square test at 0.05 to find if there is an association (relation) between the stage
of development and the district of residence as far as their effect on the number of days of
absence from school is concerned. (14 Marks)
